Batteries: Empowering your LED lighting on the go
Using batteries with our LED lights makes everything more convenient and portable. Battery packs are simple to use – you charge them, plug them in, and your lights turn on! However, figuring out which battery you need and how long it will power your lights can be a bit more complex.

Today, we’re here to demystify this process and provide you with the answers you seek. All of our LED light strips draw a specific amount of power, measured in Watts, from either a power supply or a battery. The capacity of batteries is measured in mAh (milliamp hours) or Ah (amp hours). For example, we sell batteries with capacities of 3500 mAh (3.5 Ah), 6500 mAh (6.5 Ah), and 20000 mAh (20 Ah). But how do these capacities translate to Watts?

Let’s do some math.
The calculation is actually quite straightforward. According to the electrical power formula, Watts = Amps x Volts. Our lights run on 12 Volts. So, if we substitute these values into the formula, we realize that one amp is equivalent to 12 watts of power. Therefore, our batteries contain 42 Watt Hours (12 x 3.5), 78 Watt Hours (12 x 6.5), and 240 Watt Hours (12 x 20) respectively. With this information, calculating battery life becomes a breeze.

To determine the battery life, start with the total Wattage of your light strip – let’s say the Standard Density Luma 5 strips at 21.31 Watts – and divide the battery capacity by that number. For instance, the 3800 mAh battery can power this strip for approximately 1.97 hours (42 / 21.31), the 6000 mAh battery for around 3.66 hours (78 / 21.31), and the 20000 mAh battery can keep the strip illuminated for approximately 11.26 hours (240 / 21.31).

FAQs
Q1: How long will the batteries in my lights last?

A1: The duration of battery power for your lights depends on several factors, including the type of batteries used, the brightness setting, and the capacity of the batteries.

Q2: What types of batteries are commonly used in lighting fixtures?

A2: Common battery types for lighting fixtures include alkaline, lithium, nickel-metal hydride (NiMH), and rechargeable batteries. The choice of battery type affects the runtime.

Q3: How can I determine the battery life for my lights?

A3: To determine battery life, refer to the manufacturer’s specifications for the lighting fixture. They often provide estimated runtimes based on average usage.

Q4: Can I extend the battery life of my lights?

A4: You can extend battery life by using high-capacity batteries, reducing the brightness setting, or turning the lights off when not in use. For rechargeable lights, proper charging and maintenance also help.

Q5: Are there energy-saving features in lights to maximize battery life?

A5: Some lights offer energy-saving features, such as motion sensors or timers, which can help conserve battery power by turning the lights off when not needed.

Q6: How do I calculate the expected battery life for my lights?

A6: Calculate the expected battery life by dividing the battery’s capacity (in ampere-hours, Ah) by the light’s current consumption (in amperes, A). This will provide the estimated runtime in hours.

Q7: Can I use rechargeable batteries in my lights, and how do they compare to disposable batteries in terms of runtime?

A7: Rechargeable batteries can be used in compatible lights. Their runtime depends on their capacity and the light’s power consumption. They may provide cost savings over time but typically have shorter runtimes compared to high-capacity disposable batteries.

Q8: Are there any safety concerns with using batteries in lights?

A8: Safety concerns include using the correct battery type specified by the manufacturer, avoiding mixing old and new batteries, and disposing of batteries properly to prevent environmental harm.

Q9: How can I make my lights more energy-efficient to prolong battery life?

A9: Making lights more energy-efficient involves using LED or energy-efficient bulbs, utilizing energy-saving features, and ensuring the light fixtures are in good working condition.

Q10: Are there any guidelines for storing spare batteries to ensure they maintain their capacity?

A10: Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place at room temperature. Avoid extreme temperatures, as both heat and cold can affect battery performance and capacity.

Q11: Can I use external battery packs or larger-capacity batteries to extend the runtime of my lights?

A11: In some cases, it is possible to use external battery packs or larger-capacity batteries to extend runtime. However, this may require modifications to the lighting fixture and should be done carefully.
