As the atmosphere warms, oceans around the world are becoming ever more deprived of oxygen, forcing many species to migrate from their usual homes. Researchers expect many places to experience a decline in species diversity, ending up with just those few species that can cope with the harsher conditions. Lack of ecosystem diversity means lack of resilience. "Deoxygenation is a big problem," Pauly summarises.

A rapid uptake of green fuels on vessels will require abundant new infrastructure at ports to produce and store them, and to allow ships to refuel. Ports must invest in hydrogen-generating electrolysers, renewable energy capacity, such as wind and solar power, as well as battery and hydrogen storage facilities.  Most ships will also need to be retrofitted to enable them to run on green fuels, use wind propulsion and digital software to improve their efficiency and optimise routes.

The provocative twist is that some citizens and politicians see the murderer as a local hero on a moral crusade. Behind the generic thrills, Holy Spider is an examination of society-wide misogyny that seems all the more astute in the wake of the Mahsa Amini protests. (NB)

"By the time I got to France, everybody I knew, knew how to make yoghurt cake already," she recalled. "They learn the yoghurt cake in maternelle (nursery school), and they have that recipe for the rest of their lives."

That the cake is so frequently made by children may have something to do with the ratio-driven formula at its core: one part yoghurt to one part oil, two parts sugar and three parts flour; plus three eggs and leavening. Doubling as a delicious maths problem, the recipe doesn't rely on a kitchen scale, like most French bakes, but rather on volume measures facilitated by the ubiquitous 125g terracotta yoghurt pot – a tool that has frequently found its way into Crapanzano's US-bound checked luggage.
